The announcement by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan Chase to form a company to contain health care costs for their employees has generated considerable attention � and for good reason.

The leaders of these companies are renowned for their ability to innovate. We certainly agree with them that health care costs are unsustainable and need to be lower. We�ve been saying that for years. How they plan to accomplish such a monumental task remains to be seen. Warren Buffett, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, said the companies don�t �come to this problem with answers. But we also do not accept it as inevitable.�

It�s an admirable goal and one that comes with a lot of work ahead. Jeff Bezos, the head of Amazon, acknowledges the truth by saying �the health care system is complex.�

How the companies go about cutting costs and improving results is something that many will watch. Companies like Amazon self-insure for their employees� health care and are not subject to regulation by this office.

The companies have yet to provide details on what they are considering. But we think it�s safe to assume they may have a focus on the direct purchase of health care � contracting directly with medical providers, including hospitals, and finding an imaginative way around the gnawing issue of soaring costs for prescription drugs. We will pay attention to their efforts to see what effect it has on the health care landscape and the companies we do regulate.

We hope they will build on some the key successes of the Affordable Care Act to date � greater coverage, more focus on costs and results that benefit patients. Regulators stand ready to offer the benefit of their experience in this effort.

Ingredients:

2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour (careful not to overmeasure)
1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
2 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, frozen
1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 heaping cup (190g) blueberries (fresh or frozen, do not thaw)*

Family Favorite White Chicken Chili Recipe


This white chicken chili recipe is thick, creamy and full of your favorite Tex-Mex flavors.  It�s absolutely delicious and I dare you to eat just one bowl!

1 Tbs oil
1 medium onion
1 1/2 Tsp. garlic powder
1.5 Tsp cumin

1 can mexi-corn (regular corn is fine)
3 cans great northern beans; drained and rinsed

Chinese Egg Cake Recipe


Old style Chinese egg cake calls everybody�s childhood memory. This is also referred as mini Chinese sponge cake.

2 middle size eggs (room temperature eggs)
60g cake flour (1/2 US cup)
40g castor sugar (around 3 tablespoons+1 teaspoon)

don�t know why some people are obsessed with carrots and diabetes - but get a fucking clue, learn the facts about diabetes, and leave carrots alone - and leave me alone when I eat or buy them - because I LOVE CARROTS. 
This happened right before Christmas.

I stood there in the veggie aisle, enthralled by the display of 2 lb bags of large and organic rainbow carrots - guys, they were seriously gorgeous, dare I say stunning?  
A literal rainbow of colors - purple, orange, beige - and I couldn�t wait to embrace the rainbow of carrots, chop them up and get them in my belly!
Bonus, they were only 50 cents more than the freakish large and weirdly uniform looking Frankenstein carrots  - and I knew they were tastier, because no chemicals. 

I�d planned on making an amazing carrot ginger soup I�d recently perfected when I got home, these carrots would be perfect. I grabbed two, 2 lb bags and walked towards the produce scale a few feet away. 
 Side bar: Bagged produce doesn�t always weigh the same, so take a beat and weigh them. 
In this case, one bag weighed a 1/2 a pound more than the other - and that would be the one I placed in my cart with the other ingredients. 
As I turned to put the other bag of carrots back, I heard someone say, �You�ll get diabetes if you eat all those carrots.� 
I looked over towards the apple bins and saw a woman standing in that aisle and with what seemed to be an inordinate amount of kale in her basket, but that's besides the point. 
She stood catty-corner to the isle, looking at me and shaking her head. 
I silently uttered �fuck,� looked at her and said, �I don�t know anyone who eats two pounds of carrots at once and that�s not how diabetes works." 
Then I did my best to extricate myself from the lecture I knew was headed my way.
It was like the baby carrot bbq incident of 2011 all over again - but different. 

Nine times out of ten, I try and educate about diabetes every chance I get - that's what most of us do. But not this time.

This time - on a rainy and damn near freezing night, all I wanted to do was get home, put on my PJs and create the fabulous carrot ginger soup I�d been craving and which ironically, always seemed to be followed by post meal unicorn blood sugars, every time I made it. 
Which when you think about it makes perfect sense because It�s all veggies - it�s like drinking a liquid warm salad, except that sounds gross and this soup is anything but!

I started wheeling my cart back towards the carrot wall, but Apple Annie followed my over. 

Apple Annie: Carrots are loaded with sugar - they're like donuts. 
Me: Ginger Donut soup doesn�t sound like it would be appetizing. 
Apple Annie: Carrots are loaded with sugar - they do more harm than good and mess with your insulin levels. 

And in my head, I panned left to the imaginary camera and said: HOLD MY CARROTS.

In real time and standing in front of the rainbow of veggies, I stepped on my diabetes soapbox and stated: I already have diabetes - I�ve had diabetes since I was a little girl - and not because my mom fed me carrots... or donuts... or donuts laced with carrots
I have diabetes because my pancreas crapped out and destroyed the part of my pancreas that makes insulin - STOP BLAMING PEOPLE WITH DIABETES AND STOP BLAMING CARROTS.

And instead of putting the second bag of rainbow carrots back, I tossed them in my cart in defiance and walked past her.
And Apple Annie just stared at me like I had three-heads, all of which were happily munching away on rainbow carrots. 

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bundt Cake Recipe

1 cup white granulated sugar

1/2 cup coconut milk can
1 cup sweetened coconut flakes

Frosting:
1 1/2 cups unsalted butter room temperature

7 oz jar marshmallow fluff
1 cup powdered sugar
4 oz baking white chocolate bar

White Chocolate Ganache:
4 oz baking white chocolate bar
� cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup sweetened coconut flakes for topping

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease and lightly flour 3, 8-inch round baking pans. (To flour the pans: grease with cooking spray then add some flour. Pat baking pan so that it's lightly covered in flour all over the inside, then turn the pan upside down and lightly pat to discard loose flour. **I do recommend using 3 of the same cake pans at a time because it will be much easier to divide all the batter equally among the pans.)

California millennials are entering their prime earning and acquisition years.  Many millennials are choosing to explore business startups and self employment, as well as testing the job market.

In some cases millennials may not have access to health insurance coverage through an employer or their parents.  This leaves the options of purchasing private health insurance, setting up a small employer benefit plan for your startup/business, or choosing to go without health insurance.  Statistically about 25% of California's uninsured population is made up of millennials between 26-34.  

When I look at health insurance for millennials, I look at three things: Quality, Affordability and Technology.  New players are entering the market with health insurance products designed for the Millennial Generation.

Turning a favorite pizza into a pasta bake is easy to do in minutes. Chicken, cheese, and pizza toppings is a favorite meal in our house. It's sure to become a favorite in yours.

Ingredients

16 ounces pasta, cooked al dente
2 cups grilled chicken, cubed
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup diced green pepper
1/2 cup diced mushrooms
1 teaspoon minced garlic
3 Tablespoons butter
3 Tablespoons flour
2 cups chicken broth
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
